چکیده

T ongoing avian influenza (H5N1) pandemic poses risks to both human and animal health (1–5). The potential exists for cross-species transmission of avian influenza to humans and subsequent reassortment of avian and human influenza viruses in coinfected persons (6). Although atypical presentations of avian influenza (H5N1) have been reported (7,8), in most H5N1 case-patients pneumonia was the primary condition (3,4). To assess the prevalence of avian influenza (H5N1) and influenza A pneumonia, we screened adults admitted to a medical intensive care unit (ICU) with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) for H5N1 and calculated the cost estimates for H5N1 screening in a tertiary care center of an H5N1endemic area in Thailand.

Hyperglycemia and Red Cell Distribution Width for Prediction of Mortality in Preschool Children with Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP)

Background Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major infectious cause of mortality in preschool children especially in developing countries. Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) has been associated with poor outcomes of CAP. We aimed to determine whether admission stress hyperglycemia and RDW can predict mortality in preschool children with CAP for early identification of patients at risk of ...

We evaluated the published data for the incidence, characteristics and outcomes of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The estimated incidence of MRSA CAP is 0.51-0.64 cases per 100,000. We identified 74 articles reporting data on 114 patients. Influenza like symptoms was reported in 41% of patients. Pneumonia improved in 5...

Incidence, risk factors and prognosis of nosocomial pneumonia in adult patients admitted in the intensive care unit

Introduction: Hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) is the second most commonly reported hospital infection and the most common infection in the intensive care unit (ICU). Identification of risk factors and determinants of prognosis in the occurrence of HAP and ways of prevention can be effective in reducing the incidence and mortality of these infections. In this way, we investigated, the incidenc...

The prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia hospitalized in intensive care unit

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a type of hospital acquired pneumonia with the mortality rate between 27% and 76% that develops more than 48–72 h after endotracheal intubation. Possible causes leading to this infection can be Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in bronchoalveolar samples of patients with ...
